Sam Liu is the creator and voice behind Wayward Fanboy—a multimedia platform dedicated to exploring how pop culture can inspire personal growth, identity, and healing; but Wayward Fanboy isn’t just about fandom. It’s about what happens when the stories we love begin to change the way we see ourselves.
Growing up as a Chinese American navigating racism, exclusion, and identity struggles, Sam often found himself searching for belonging in a world that didn’t always reflect him. For years, the messages he absorbed—both socially and through media—left him questioning his worth and place in the world. Everything began to shift when he started engaging with stories differently.
Through films like Everything Everywhere All at Once and Karate Kid: Legends, Sam experienced something deeper than entertainment—he experienced transformation. These stories didn’t just inspire him; they helped him rebuild his sense of identity, self-worth, and purpose. That transformation became the foundation of Wayward Fanboy.
Today, Sam is actively pursuing a career in clinical mental health counseling, where he is developing the skills to help others navigate challenges such as self-esteem, trauma, and identity. His work is deeply influenced by his passion for integrating psychology, storytelling, and faith in a way that is both meaningful and accessible.
Through Wayward Fanboy, Sam creates content that goes beyond reviews and reactions. His platform features in-depth interviews with actors, filmmakers, and creatives, alongside thoughtful commentary that bridges entertainment and mental health. Whether he’s breaking down a character’s psychological journey, sharing his own story, or highlighting powerful moments from the stories we love, his goal remains the same:
To help people feel seen. To help people grow and to show that the right story, at the right time, can change a life.
Sam’s long-term vision is to expand Wayward Fanboy into a leading platform that not only entertains, but empowers—while also conducting research on how storytelling can be used as a tool for mental health and identity development; because to Sam, being a “fanboy” isn’t something to be ashamed of.
It’s a starting point; and going “wayward” might just be the path that leads you to who you were meant to become.
Sam’s Faith Journey
Growing up as an American-born Chinese boy, faith and religion were topics that were never brought up at home. Instead, most topics of discussion usually involved academic success and embracing Chinese culture. In fact, even if I wanted to attend church, it wasn’t possible as I was enrolled in Sunday morning Chinese school for over a decade to learn how to speak, write and read Mandarin. The only way I learned about Christianity was from the media.
2005-2013: When most children watched VeggieTales to understand Biblical stories and learn about Christian faith, I was watching Supernatural, a show that most definitely wasn’t suitable for a 9-year old child like me to watch. At the time, I was frequently made fun of at school for loving “lame” TV shows such as Power Rangers and SpongeBob SquarePants. Wanting to appear “cool” to my classmates, I watched the pilot episode of Supernatural when it debuted after seeing the trailer for it, which depicted itself as an adult dark fantasy horror show. With grown men fighting monsters, classic rock music, and lots of “colorful” language in it, I thought this was going to make me cool at school.
Unfortunately, that plan backfired hard when Supernatural quickly garnered a mostly female fan-base. As a result, Supernatural became my guilty pleasure show for the next 9 years. I didn’t “come out of the closet” admitting that I loved the show until the tenth season began airing. However, it was through watching all 15 seasons of Supernatural that I learned about some major Biblical stories including but not limited to: The Four Horsemen of The Apocalypse, The Seven Seals of God, The Fall of Lucifer, The Nephilim, The Antichrist, Leviathan, The Garden of Eden and The Tree of Knowledge - all of which were fictionally adapted (albeit either inaccurately or only surface-level).
2013-2014: My mother (who surrendered her life to Christ during my high school years) encouraged me to find and attend a church (since hers was primarily a Mandarin-speaking one) to find stable community. I wasn’t opposed to the idea considering that watching Supernatural made me very curious about Christianity and The Gospel. After I graduated from Chinese school, I began attending the local church that was near our home during my junior year.
To say that the first church community I engaged with was emotionally distressing for me would be a major understatement. I experienced a lot of church hurt when I was there and often felt dismissed, excluded and judged. Following that experience, I was hesitant to ever engage with a church community again. However, my mother encouraged me to continue engaging in God’s Word despite the church hurt I experienced.
2018-Early 2020: During this span of time, I was semi-frequently making commutes up to Wisconsin to hang out with a few (former) friends during the weekends. During some Sunday mornings when I would drive up there to meet with those friends, they’d ask me if I wanted to drive up early and attend the worship service with them or come by later after they came home from church. Wanting to spend as much time with them as possible, I agreed to just attend service with them and thus made my first visit to CrossWay Church. Of the few times I attended service there, I didn’t think much of it other than the fact that the sermons were interesting and that the lead pastor there looked like a hybrid of Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman and Ralph Macchio from Cobra Kai.
March 26th to April 12th, 2022: During this time, I went through a major crisis and fallout that left me experiencing a “dark night of the soul.” I became severely depressed, isolated, lonely, misunderstood and betrayed. This experience almost led me to lose my life entirely. As one of my final rituals, I went to the theaters to see one final movie. The film I saw was a newly released film called Everything Everywhere All at Once, and to say that this movie made me incredibly emotional and feel understood would be the understatement of the decade. It felt odd to me that a film like this came at just the right time when I needed it. There was no way it was some random coincidence. Was God trying to guide me somewhere? Shortly after, I began to make a conscious effort to start finding a new church, but this time I was going to be extremely thorough in finding a congregation that is warm, inviting, welcoming, humble, compassionate, inspiring and most importantly: truly centered on Christ.
Late 2022-Early 2023: After watching many CrossWay sermons online on Sunday mornings and going through an extremely thorough vetting process, I finally made the decision to visit CrossWay Church in-person on my own for the first time. The thing was, this church wasn’t close to home. It was going to be a 1-hour and 20-minute commute to this church every Sunday if I was going to commit to this community and join their congregation.
June 11th, 2023: I made my first solo in-person visit to this church. Following the worship service, the church held a meet and greet event where I got to formally meet the lead pastor there as well as some of the staff. I'm not going to lie, the first time I visited this church (on my own), I was incredibly scared and my anxiety was at an all-time high because I didn't know anybody there and was visiting as an outsider. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that I was welcomed with open arms.
August 27th, 2023: I got baptized at this church and publicly declared Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. Since then, I have called CrossWay Church home, served at the church, made some amazing new relationships there and most importantly: deepen my relationship with Christ. God is so good!
My Testimony:
“Before I was saved, I lived a very empty and nihilistic life for many years that was filled with consistent feelings of depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation. I believed that nothing in life mattered, including my own life.
Throughout the years, I went searching for anyone out there who could pull me out of total chaos. I often took the words of people, whether positive or negative as scripture. It was through these actions that I was broken-hearted, burdened and beaten down for many years. That was until I discovered Jesus Christ.
It was through Him that I learned to forgive quickly, love freely, and to walk courageously through life and I declare that there is no better teacher out there who gave me anywhere near the peace that Jesus Christ did.
It was only after being saved did I finally discover that God is truth itself.
I stand here today knowing that His promise is peace and my testimony is my healing, and I’m here to publicly declare Him as my Lord and Savior."

Best Piece of Advice I’ve Gotten or Heard: Give a good idea to a mediocre team and they will screw it up but, give a mediocre idea to a great team and they will either fix it or come up with something better.
Best Piece of Wisdom I’ve Gotten or Heard: “Hard times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create weak men and, weak men create hard times.” - G. Michael Hopf, Those Who Remain
Favorite Movie Quote: "Be kind, especially when we don't know what's going on." - Waymond Wang from Everything Everywhere All at Once
Favorite Bible Verse: “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.” - Romans 12:14-16 (New International Version)
Favorite Self-Care Activity: Writing in my gratitude journal.
How I Would Spend a One-Day Vacation: Hiking trip to Devil’s Lake State Park
If I Had To Choose My Final Meal: Two packs of Kang Shi Fu Braised Beef Noodle Soup, Master Kong Lemon Iced Red Tea & Meiji Hello Panda Strawberry Cookies
Favorite Opening to a Movie or TV Show: The opening scene of Up. If you’ve seen this film and DIDN’T love this for some reason, then I gotta ask, “are you okay?”
Favorite Ending to a Movie or TV Show: The 12-minute epilogue to the series finale of Superman & Lois titled “It Went By So Fast.” The first time I watched this episode, I was audibly crying during the epilogue. It’s the perfect ending I’ve ever seen for a superhero. Check it out on YouTube! (Part 1) (Part 2) (Part 3)
Something That Made Me Cry or Emotional: It’s a tie between my first time watching Everything Everywhere All at Once in theaters on April 12th, 2022 where I literally cried my eyes out at Waymond’s “Be Kind” speech and watching Ke Huy Quan win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor on March 12th, 2023.
Something That Made Me Laugh Really Hard: One of the top things I’ve laughed the hardest at was the opening scene of The Office episode “Stress Relief: Part 1” where Dwight Schrute stages a fake fire drill in the office. Particularly there is a segment during that scene where the audience discovers that Angela Martin (one of the employees there) has been hiding a cat in the office the entire time and begs one of her co-workers, Oscar Martinez to save her cat Bandit. This easily led to one of my favorite lines in all of comedy: “Save Bandit!” (ONLY to be rivaled by the improvised “Network Connectivity Problems” joke from Parks and Recreation)
Something That Scared The Crap Out of Me: My first time watching the series premiere of Attack on Titan. I watched the first episode in the middle of the night by myself in the dark with nobody around during the scene where the Smiling Titan makes its debut. When the next morning came, I was too scared to open the shades to my window, thinking that the Smiling Titan was going to be there, burst through the window, rip me in half and then eat me just like it did in the show.
One of My Biggest Pet Peeves: When people put the volume on the TV at a bizarre odd number instead of putting it to a clean round number. For example, this would mean putting the volume on the TV at 19 instead of 20, or 39 instead of 40. Even WORSE would be when a season of a TV show ends at 19 episodes instead of the standard 20-23 episodes. A few shows I enjoy watching have done this and I can’t even begin to describe how annoyed I get internally whenever this happens.
Something People May Not Know About Me: I am able to quote the entirety of Titanic, more specifically the extended cut of the movie with all the deleted and extended scenes, word by word. If you ever meet me in person and ask me to re-enact a scene from the movie, I’d be more than happy to do so!
